Wooden grandstands and a boxing ring once stood in this area. The boxing ring was in the bottom and the grandstands came all the way to the top of the hill. A large gym was built between the stands and the Mess Hall. Boxing and wrestling matches were held in order to keep up morale amongst the troops. This also doubled as an amphitheater where military band concerts and other entertainment were provided. Early newspaper articles state that as many as 3,000 people watched as military boxers competed against the locals on this site.
